    Description

This Rare card was issued by the THOMAS H. HALL Tobacco  Co. as an insert premium in their brands of BETWEEN The ACTS and BRAVO  Tobacco and Cigarettes in 1880,
Making this series one earliest know tobacco sets.
These cards are from an extremely rare series of  over 4 cards entitled , “ Presidential & Vice Presidential Candidates”  and are designated a set N347 in Burdick’s American Card Catalogue.  The front of the card features a portrait of one of the Candidates from the Election for the office of the President of United States of  America for 1880 in an oval with a decorative border featuring the Candidates name and advertising for Between the Acts Cigarettes. The back of  the card also features advertising for Hall Cigarettes.   This card features WINFIELD S. HANCOCK   Here is some information I found about him on the internet:
Winfield Scott Hancock (February 14, 1824 – February 9, 1886) was a career U.S. Army officer and the Democratic nominee for President of the United States in 1880. He served with distinction in the Army for four decades, including service in the Mexican-American War and as a Union general in the American Civil War. Known to his Army colleagues as "Hancock the Superb", he was noted in particular for his personal leadership at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. One military historian wrote, "No other Union general at Gettysburg dominated men by the sheer force of their presence more completely than Hancock." As another wrote, "... his tactical skill had won him the quick admiration of adversaries who had come to know him as the 'Thunderbolt of the Army of the Potomac'." His military service continued after the Civil War, as Hancock participated in the military Reconstruction of the South and the Army's presence at the Western frontier.  Hancock's reputation as a war hero at Gettysburg, combined with his rare status as a prominent figure with impeccable Unionist credentials and pro-states' rights views, made him a quadrennial presidential possibility in the years after the Civil War. His noted integrity was a counterpoint to the corruption of the era, for as President Rutherford B. Hayes said, "... [i]f, when we make up our estimate of a public man, conspicuous both as a soldier and in civil life, we are to think first and chiefly of his manhood, his integrity, his purity, his singleness of purpose, and his unselfish devotion to duty, we can truthfully say of Hancock that he was through and through pure gold”  This nationwide popularity led the Democrats to nominate him for President in 1880. Although he ran a strong campaign, Hancock was narrowly defeated by Republican James A. Garfield.
The Lithography for the card was done by Heppenhiemer and Maurer of New York..   The Cards measures 3 1/16 inches by 1 5/8 inches  approximately. The card does obviously have some condition issues that are clearly visible in the scan.   I have scanned the card fairly large front and back, for you to be able to judge condition for yourself .   This would make a fantastic gift for any one interested in Early American Political History, and would make a fantastic display piece if framed.  Having the opportunity to add this rare type card to your collection doesn’t happen often (in any condition).   Don't miss out on this over 130  year old piece (a true AMERICAN antique).  I doubt you will see another for awhile.
I  will be trying to list several  EARLY TRADE & TYPE CARDS over the next few days (spread across different categories),
including one or two that are unrecorded in any guide, that were put given away with Tobacco, Caramel, Candy, Gum, Chocolate, Bread Coffee Tea Cereal and other products, covering such diverse subjects as Native American Indians , Baseball , Football, Boy Scouts, Ice Hockey, Golf, Presidents of the United States, NCAA and IVY League Colleges and Universities and Circus themes.  To view the other cards I have up on ebay please click  on the “View Sellers other Items” Icon located on this page. It will take you directly to them.
