Description
This is an antique Japanese balance scale (hakkari
) dating to Meiji Era (c. 1910). It has silver dots inset on both sides used to measure while a weight is slid down the shaft to determine an exact weight. The shaft is made of Japanese red oak. It still has its 100+ year old patina. There is a forged iron hook at the end and two rings where rope straps are attached set on opposite sides for hanging the scale. It has been signed by the artisan (see picture 6).
Having been in storage over 100 years, with exception to some oxidation on iron parts and a warm-aged patina on the long oak shaft, it remains in
very good functional condition
.
This scale measures 49 1/2" long (126 cm).
Please note:
The scale shown in picture 1 is
NOT
included in this listing but is provided for size reference. The scale you will receive is pictured in pictures 2-12.
