    Description

Mercruiser Type Alpha One Generation 1 Gen 2 Two New Shift Cable E/Z-Glide Pre-alpha
This is for 1 shift cable with ends! From 1963 up to date and it is for all Mercruiser boats except Bravo’s. So this is for type 1, pre alpha, alpha 1 gen 1 & gen 2. This runs from engine to drive. (Through Transom) About 6 foot standard!
I call this an E/Z Glide Cable!
These cables have a nylon or teflon coating that makes them easily glide through outer casing for smooter operation!
    With all shift cable installs:
When bell housing is off, first install outer shield. Then install bellows boot. Then install inner cable so it is inside outer shield when you run it up to the motor otherwise the stiff piece on the end will not make the curves going up to the motor.
To install outer shield and tighten the brass nut, you can grind down 2 side of a deep well socket so you can use a crescent wrench on it to tighten the cable an extra turn.
When we install bellows we heat up a cup of water so it is real hot about ¾” deep. We put a dab of grease on a q-tip and get grease inside the small end of bellows and grease on the brass that has to run through it. We soak the tip of bellows and brass in the hot water for 15 seconds and force it up on the shaft. You can also use some wd 40 to help slide it up where you need it.
Make sure you then install the inner cable before you run it up to engine compartment and tighten screw clamp on bellows.
Please read on, it is in your best interest!
Ok to begin with Mercruiser is a sub-division of Mercury so I will call the parts Mercruiser, Mercury actually has the reference of outboard motors and Mercruiser is I/O (inboard/outboard) Either way they are connected!
More and more I am seeing aftermarket parts installed on new boats and people are calling me more and more for my older refurbished parts because the new so called OEM parts are failing.
All the smaller parts are Stainless Steel, Aluminum, Brass, Graphite, Plastic and the inner cable is stainless steel drive end and nylon coated steel with the outer cable shield made of what looks like plastic & nylon coated steel. So all water exposed areas are coated. Never put grease or oil in these or any cable it will gum up in a short time.
As I said I have tried almost all the aftermarket brands and there is something about all of them I don’t like. I will not mention brand names! But some brands use a regular steel wire for lock down at drive end, some use standard steel fork ends for shifting linkage or the cable is steel and uncoated.
So here is what I have done.
I rebuild hundreds of gimbals a year and so my experience is passed on to you. I buy these in bulk from 2 different aftermarket companies and I use the good parts from both of the companies to make what I am calling these Easy Glide shift cables. These are as close to the quality of OEM as I can get without the cost of OEM Mercruiser!
Of course I can’t pay for 2 shift cables to make 1 set so what I do is keep the parts from 2 to sell to my customers and the parts I don’t like I make kits and sell them in bulk (100 lots Cheaper +shipping) to Marina’s, eBay sellers and other aftermarket dealers. So you will see my rejects being resold. If you want a 100 lot message me. I can post on eBay! My rejects are as stated + shipping and the high quality for lots of 100 are plus shipping!
If you are looking for tips and or bellows check my other items in my eBay store!
If you are an international buyer and want more than 4, message me for a cheaper shipping quote.
