    Description

Original Australian World War I poster: "Late Nurse Cavell / She gave all - you buy Peace Bonds"
    (Sydney: E.B. Studios, circa 1915)
Color lithographic poster in good condition. Measures 20 x 30.25". Beautiful portrait of Nurse Edith Louisa Cavell (1865-1915), British nurse and heroine who became a martyr for helping hundreds of allied soldiers escape from German occupied Belgium. She was shot by a German firing squad on October 12, 1915. (Her execution appalled Allied countries and was influential in the US joining the war.)The poster has wear around the edges - many small chips and tears. There is a small tear near her shoulder, and a small patch of insect damage near her right ear (no sign of any little nasties now!). Please see photo. The poster has been stored folded, so there is soiling along the fold lines on the back side. A striking and poignant WWI era poster.
