  • Condition: Excellent condition, nice clean fronts & backs with mostly very good corners, a very few being ever so slightly blunted. The backs have two very thin, short ( 3/16'' x 1/2'' or so ) strip of clear tape on two opposite sides,that is flush with the edge of the card, please use zoom to view. #16 The Pine Gross Beak...pic #8, card on far right has small diagonal crease on lower right corner.

    This item is a mixed lot of 15 cards from 4 different series, all titled ''Useful Birds Of America'' issued by Church & Dwight Co, the makers of Arm & Hammer baking soda, circa 1920. There is one card from the first set, one from the second, ten from the third  & three from the tenth set. The 3 # 10 cards do not have the Arm & Hammer circle logo on the front. Kind of an odd title...

    These 99 year old cards are exquisitely illustrated, the artwork is detailed & very colorful, simply beautiful to look at. The cards feature a nice selection of 15 different american birds. Along with the delightful front, the backs tell us that a full set of 30 cards could be ordered from the company for a whopping 10 cents...payable in coin or stamps!... those were the days...The backs also devote half the space to a good description of the bird & its habits.
    They are in very good condition, nice clean fronts & backs with mostly very good corners, a very few being ever so slightly blunted.     The cards are in between standard & large size English cigarette cards, & I have shown a quarter to show scale. These are perhaps the best illustrated bird cards that I have ever had, the extra size really makes them a great candidate for framing. Nicely laid out with window matting, perhaps with a see through a glass back, they would look gorgeous. My photos are of each page, front & back, so you can use the zoom feature to inspect each card. There are some close up shots too. These cards are original antiques, and are about 100 years old.
